Our company was hired to install a drainage pit for a full basement stairwell during the home construction project. Upon arriving on-site and starting the initial digging, we discovered that the proposed location for the drainage pit was directly beneath the old septic field. As a result, the septic field drain rock kept caving in as we tried to dig the drainage pit.
After discussing the issue with the customer, we were hired to complete the construction of the concrete stairwell. We quickly determined that the stairwell had to be built before the drainage pit could be installed due to the incredibly tight space. The hole for the stairwell had already been partially dug by others, further complicating the situation.
Once again, we had to get extremely creative and resourceful to overcome the difficult site conditions. Our team is always prepared to adapt and find solutions to keep projects on track, no matter how challenging the site may be.

We were brought in to take over the construction of a stairwell after the customer was unsure that previous contractors could complete the project to their satisfaction. Our original plan was to install a drainage pit for the new stairwell. However, we quickly discovered that the drainage couldn’t be installed until the stairwell was completed due to site constraints.
We cleaned up the existing excavation to align with the engineered design for the project and proceeded with building the stairwell. Despite dealing with an over-engineered design that was missing crucial details, we pressed forward. The foundation wall was cut, the footing was formed and poured, and the retaining wall was constructed and poured. After completing these steps, we installed the perimeter drain and backfilled the wall on both sides to the angle of the staircase.
Once the stairwell was completed, we finally got to the initial task we were contracted for: the drainage pit. The pit needed to be 7 feet below the old septic field, which caused the septic field drain rock to collapse into the excavation as we dug. After carefully digging an enormous hole in a very tight backyard and consulting with the geotechnical engineer, we managed to restore the site.
With the excavation complete, we installed the exterior door and poured the concrete staircase leading to the basement. The custom staircase was the finishing touch, and the owners were able to close out the permit and now enjoy greatly improved access to their basement!
